As someone who's never without a book (well, Kindle these days), I agree with everything you said Mo. I can finish a fiction book within a week ... but I find most non-fiction books usually take me a bit longer. Too much thinking, taking notes, etc. 😂
Hello Lou, Yes, it's the same with me these days. I can't finish a nonfiction book easily. I think with all the social media, podcasts, etc, I've maxed out on nonfiction. But I still love to read literary fiction.
Reading is a super power , I struggled earlier on but over the last couple of years , I have seen the benefits, books can change your life for the better. Thanks Mo.
Excellent points that you make! Reading on Substack in the morning - and choosing what I read carefully - has replaced my Facebook scrolling or email answering and it’s a much better place to start the day!
Hi Issa, I agree with your thoughts on the importance of reading. I do read, but not as often as I should. However, I will make a greater effort after hearing your perspective.
'...locking us into a robotic, linear lifestyle enslaved by technology and an instant gratification mindset.'
When it comes to reduced reading among people, I think it's mainly due to the instant gratification mindset brought upon by such technology and social media.
And it's incredibly unfortunate how it's made us less patient and have less appreciation for reading books.
Mo, I rarely read anymore, but you are tempting me. I appreciate how you approached the benefits of reading from so many different angles and love the idea of your morning "deep reading" especially.
Thanks for your kind words! If you ever decide to dive back into reading, even just a little each morning, I think you’ll find it adds a lot of value to your day.

No arguments there. Reading and learning is one of the great joys of being alive.
Indeed!
Absolutely agree with you Ryan.
It satisfies the soul like nothing else can !
Reading is uniquely satisfying, isn't it? As you say, nothing like it.
I agree, Ryan!
They say reading today has become a luxury.
Well in that case I strive my best to be as luxurious as possible 🥰
Love that quote from Buffet! Reading is so important. It can literally change the way you think.
Totally agree with you! Thanks, Aaron!

Yes, Tinashe. Books make us different people.

Great Korie. It's like you're consuming more nourishing information now.
Oh, I love that morning practice! Keep reading! And yes to transformation versus information. 🙏❤️
Thank you! Reading truly opens up so much within us.
I really needed this, thank you for sharing!
I need to start today! Now
Books as a « sacred indulgence ». I like that thought !

Thanks, Rotimi! I'm glad my perspective resonated with you.
Yes, it did

Oh yes! Shantaram made me feel like I actually visited India. I can still recall vivid images from the book

Reading truly has been a gift to my life--one of only a few things that helps me see the world through others' eyes. Thanks for sharing this, Mo.
And the wiser we become.
